General Description |
Struvite is a mineral composed of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate, and is commonly found in urine and kidney stones. It forms when urine becomes alkaline and the pH is high, leading to the precipitation of struvite crystals. These crystals can accumulate and grow in the urinary tract, causing pain and discomfort. Struvite stones are often treated through dietary changes and the use of medications to help dissolve the stones. In wastewater treatment, struvite can also cause scaling and clogging in pipes and equipment, leading to operational issues. Efforts are being made to find innovative ways to recover and reuse struvite as a sustainable source of phosphorus and nitrogen. |
